Because of a severe pistol shortage resulting from the 2nd Afghan War (1878-1880) and the Zulu War (1879), the War Department purchased 1, 000 Tranter revolvers on the open market. These pistols, most of which were destined for the Zulu campaign, were designed to fire.450 in calibre ammunition approved by the Government. They are marked with the broad arrow, W D (War Department), Enfield inspection marks, and the date 3.79. These pistols were described as non-interchangeable since, being hand-made, their parts could not be exchanged between weapons, as they could in the later machine-made Government revolvers.); © National Army Museum

EDITORS COMMENTS
This photograph showcases the Tranter . 450 inch double-action centre-fire revolver, dating back to 1878. Created by the British School in the 19th century, this print is housed at the National Army Museum in London. The Tranter Army model was a six-shot revolver specifically designed to address the dire shortage of pistols during significant conflicts like the 2nd Afghan War and Zulu War. With its distinct features, this firearm stands out as a symbol of innovation and necessity. Manufactured for military use, these revolvers were acquired by the War Department through open market purchases. Around 1,000 Tranter revolvers were procured primarily for deployment in the Zulu campaign. Marked with government-approved calibre ammunition (. 450 inches), these pistols bear notable engravings such as the broad arrow symbolizing government property and W D (War Department). Additionally, Enfield inspection marks and a date stamp of "3.79" can be found on these firearms. Unlike later machine-made Government revolvers that allowed interchangeable parts between weapons, these handcrafted Tranter models were described as non-interchangeable due to their unique construction methods. This remarkable print not only captures an iconic piece of weaponry but also serves as a reminder of historical events where resource shortages pushed authorities to seek unconventional solutions.
