Oakleaf design belt fitting with a depiction of the White Tower, the central keep of the Tower of London, within a circlet bearing the unit title, Tower Hamlets Artillery.
When an invasion scare in 1859 led to a flood of volunteers forming new military units to defend Great Britain, artillery volunteers corps were formed. The Tower hamlets Artillery volunteers were raised in Poplar, East London in 1860. The cost of maintaining some artillery volunteer units was very high and as a result the Tower Hamlets were disbanded in 1873.

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases a waistbelt clasp belonging to an officer of the Tower Hamlets Artillery Volunteers, dating back to 1860-1873. The intricate design features an oakleaf pattern with a remarkable depiction of the White Tower, the iconic central keep of the Tower of London. Encircling this image is a band displaying the unit's title, "Tower Hamlets Artillery". During a period marked by invasion concerns in 1859, numerous volunteers rallied together to form military units for Great Britain's defense. As part of this movement, artillery volunteer corps emerged across the country. The Tower Hamlets Artillery Volunteers were raised in Poplar, East London in 1860 as one such dedicated group. However, due to financial constraints associated with maintaining these specialized units, they were disbanded in 1873. Volunteer corps members proudly wore insignia made from silver or white metal until the establishment of the Territorial Force (TF) in 1908 brought about changes in uniform and rank distinctions. This particular waistbelt clasp serves as a testament to both historical events and personal dedication. Preserved at the National Army Museum in London, this photograph offers us a glimpse into British military history during the late 19th century. Its detailed craftsmanship and symbolic imagery remind us of those who volunteered their service and commitment to protect their homeland from potential threats.
