Waffles and butter on pewter plates with an apple, roll, jug, standing salt
2973585 Waffles and butter on pewter plates with an apple, roll, jug, standing salt, and a beer glass with prunts on a cloth-covered table (oil on panel) by German School, (17th century); 38.6x51.2 cm; Private Collection; (add.info.: Waffles were reserved for special celebrations, most notably during the yearly Carnival that preceded Lent. The apple is the ultimate symbol for original sin. The portrayed white roll resembles those depicted in Bruegels work and is again reflective of a treat. White rolls were costly, whole wheat or rye bread the standard fare. Beer which would have been contained in the jug and drunk from the beer glass was consumed by both children and adults. Usually made from fermented hops and
malted barley, it was boiled in its preparation and thus safer to drink than water, which was often contaminated. Butter and salt were also luxury items. This was particularly true of salt, here indicated by its central positioning behind the waffles and its imposing cylindrical container. The pronounced creases of the fine linen tablecloth show it to be from a well-run household as it is freshly laundered.); eLawrence Steigrad Fine Arts, New York; German, out of copyright

EDITORS COMMENTS
This 17th-century oil painting by the German School titled "Waffles and butter on pewter plates with an apple, roll, jug, standing salt" offers a glimpse into the culinary delights of the past. The composition showcases a beautifully set table covered in a pristine linen cloth, adorned with various delectable treats. The waffles take center stage, symbolizing special celebrations such as Carnival before Lent. Their golden brown texture tempts the viewer's taste buds while highlighting their exclusivity during that time period. An apple rests nearby, representing the notion of original sin. A white roll reminiscent of Bruegel's work adds to the luxurious spread. These rolls were considered costly delicacies compared to standard whole wheat or rye bread commonly consumed at that time. A jug containing beer stands proudly on display; this beverage was enjoyed by both children and adults due to its safer nature than contaminated water. Luxury items like butter and salt are also featured prominently in this still life masterpiece. The cylindrical container holding salt is positioned centrally behind the waffles, emphasizing its importance within households of means. The fine linen tablecloth exhibits pronounced creases but appears freshly laundered—a testament to a well-run household where attention to detail is paramount. This intriguing print captures not only culinary indulgences but also provides insights into societal norms and customs surrounding food consumption during this era.
