EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures a historic moment in the year 1909, showcasing the distinguished Kings Indian Orderly Officers. The photograph was taken by C Vandyk, a renowned photographer of that era. The King's Indian Orderly Officers were appointed annually by the Viceroy of India starting from 1903. These officers consisted of carefully selected British and Indian officers and NCOs who served during the London season, which spanned from April to August. Their duties included attending court events, official engagements, and significant ceremonies like Trooping the Colour. In this image, we see five individuals standing side by side with utmost pride and elegance. From left to right are Major P Holland-Pryor representing the 13th Duke of Connaught's Lancers (Watson's Horse), Rissaldar Major Hanwant Singh from the esteemed 3rd Skinner's Horse regiment, Rissaldar Mangal Singh hailing from the valiant 16th Cavalry unit, Subadar Major Rekha Ram serving in the honorable 6th Jat Light Infantry division, and lastly Subadar Major Prem Singh belonging to the prestigious 32nd Sikh Pioneers. This remarkable photograph is part of a collection comprising thirty-three images captured between 1903-1938 primarily by Vandyk himself. It now resides within London's National Army Museum archives as an invaluable piece depicting an important chapter in history when these extraordinary men represented their regiments at royal occasions under imperial rule.
