8666225 Fischerstechen / Joust (colour litho) by Christophe (Colomb, Georges) (1856-1945); Private Collection; (add.info.: Fischerstechen. Translation: Joust. The jousting, which only occurs occasionally today, used to be a regular festival at which the fishermen, standing in boats, tried to push each other into the water with long poles. It is one of the many ancient artisan combat games which, in imitation of the games of chivalry, mostly adapted to the character of the trade in question. EDITORS COMMENTS
This vibrant colour lithograph captures the lively and competitive tradition of Fischerstechen, or Jousting, as depicted by artist Christophe (Colomb, Georges) in the early 20th century. The scene shows fishermen standing in boats, armed with long poles as they engage in a playful yet intense battle to push each other into the water. This ancient artisan combat game was once a popular festival that celebrated the skills and camaraderie of fishermen.
The artwork beautifully illustrates the spirit of competition and camaraderie among these skilled craftsmen, who embraced this unique form of jousting as a way to showcase their strength and agility. The detailed depiction of the boats, costumes, and expressions on the faces of the fishermen truly brings this historical tradition to life.
As one of many old-world games inspired by chivalry and adapted to fit specific trades, Fischerstechen is a fascinating glimpse into a bygone era where such festivities were common occurrences. This print serves as both a visual delight and a reminder of the rich cultural heritage that continues to inspire artists and viewers alike.
