Kaffeeriecher / Coffee Smeller (colour litho)

8666262 Kaffeeriecher / Coffee Smeller (colour litho) by Christophe (Colomb, Georges) (1856-1945); Private Collection; (add.info.: Kaffeeriecher. Translation: Coffee Smeller. Coffee only became a popular drink in the second half of the 19th century. In the 18th century it was still a rare treat and limited to privileged coffee houses. Prussia established a state monopoly on coffee. Special control officers, the so-called coffee smellers, had to search the apartments for forbidden coffee, similar to today's petroleum trade. EDITORS COMMENTS
This colour lithograph titled "Kaffeeriecher / Coffee Smeller" by Christophe (Colomb, Georges) transports us back to a time when coffee was a rare and privileged indulgence. In the 18th century, before it became a popular drink in the second half of the 19th century, coffee was limited to exclusive coffee houses and even subject to state monopoly in Prussia. The image depicts a scene where special control officers known as "coffee smellers" are conducting searches in apartments for forbidden coffee, reminiscent of today's regulations on controlled substances. The intricate details and historical context captured in this print offer a glimpse into the social customs and restrictions surrounding the consumption of coffee during that era. As we admire this piece from Deutsche Kulturbilder, we are reminded of how far we have come in our relationship with this beloved beverage. From being a luxury reserved for the elite to becoming an essential part of daily life for many around the world, coffee has certainly undergone quite an evolution over time. This artwork serves as both a visual delight and a fascinating insight into the cultural history of one of our favorite drinks.
