8666224 Offiziers-Picknick / Officers' Picnic (colour litho) by Christophe (Colomb, Georges) (1856-1945); Private Collection; (add.info.: Offiziers-Picknick. Translation: Officers' Picnic. The picnic (from the English picnic = feast), the improvised country meal in the open air, to which each participant had to contribute ready-made food, was one of the popular material pleasures of nature in the 18th century. It often preceded a hunting expedition or formed one favored by the military interruption of strenuous field service drills. EDITORS COMMENTS
This vibrant lithograph captures the essence of an Officers' Picnic, a beloved pastime in the 18th century. The scene depicts a group of officers enjoying an outdoor feast, each contributing their own prepared food to the gathering. The picnic was not only a time for indulging in delicious meals but also served as a welcome break from the rigors of military life. The image exudes a sense of camaraderie and relaxation as the officers sit around a makeshift table, surrounded by lush greenery and clear blue skies. It is evident that this event was more than just a meal; it was an opportunity for these men to bond and unwind amidst nature's beauty. As one officer pours wine into his comrade's glass and another reaches for some bread, we can almost hear their laughter and chatter filling the air. The artist has captured this moment with such detail and warmth that we feel transported back in time to join in on the festivities. Whether preceding a hunting expedition or simply providing respite from field drills, the Officers' Picnic was cherished by all who partook in it. This print serves as a delightful reminder of simpler times when good food, good company, and good scenery were all one needed for true contentment.
