EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases a young woman from Danzig in the 16th century, beautifully captured by artist Edmond Lechevallier-Chevignard. Dressed in an elegant long green silk dress, adorned with a black apron and a regal gold crown, she exudes grace and sophistication. The handcolored illustration brings to life the intricate details of her attire, highlighting the craftsmanship of the era. Lithographed by A. Didier, L. Flameng, and F. Laguillermie for Georges Duplessis' renowned book "Costumes historiques des XVIe, XVIIe et XVIIIe siècles" (Historical costumes of the 16th, 17th and 18th centuries), this image offers us a glimpse into fashion history. Published in Paris in 1867 as part of Duplessis' series on historical costumes spanning several centuries, this particular volume continued Camille Bonnard and Paul Mercuri's earlier work on costumes from the 12th to the 15th centuries. Edmond Lechevallier-Chevignard was not only an accomplished artist but also an interior designer for various public buildings and churches during his time. His talent earned him recognition as a professor at the National School of Decorative Arts in 1874. Through this print from Fine Art Finder's collection by Bridgeman Images, we are transported back to Danzig's rich cultural heritage during one of its most vibrant periods - where beauty met tradition with every stitch sewn into this young woman's exquisite ensemble.
