Coloured lithograph of the ironclad troopship, HMS Crocodile (1887), shown here from her starboard side lying at anchor under a deep orange sky, her white hull reflected in a placid sea. Birds skim the surface of the water. Behind her, low hills can be seen on a distant coastline. A Euphrates-class ship, HMS Crocodile was built originally for the transport of troops and could carry as many as 1,200 soldiers with their families bound mainly for India. She also visited Egypt, Aden and Malta during her service. A double row of portholes extends along the length of the hull and the three masts of her auxilliary barque rig are shown. A small plume of smoke issues from the single funnel.); © National Maritime Museum, Greenwich, London
