EDITORS COMMENTS
This engraving from 1813 showcases the iconic Montague House, now famously known as the British Museum. The image takes us back to a time when this magnificent structure stood proudly in London, representing the epitome of C17th architecture. Originally built around 1680 by Robert Hooke, Montague House suffered a devastating fire in 1686 but was promptly rebuilt in its original style. In an act of great cultural significance, it was purchased by Parliament in 1753 to house and exhibit Sir Hans Sloane's remarkable collections. This marked the beginning of its transformation into one of the world's most renowned museums. The British Museum opened its doors to the public in 1759, inviting visitors to explore its vast treasures and artifacts. The vignette included within this print showcases a newer addition to the museum building constructed in 1804. As we delve into this enchanting scene captured by an anonymous English School artist from the 19th century, we are drawn towards Montague House's grand facade and exquisite garden fountain. These elements add an air of elegance and charm that perfectly complemented Bloomsbury's thriving atmosphere during that era. Although Montague House met its unfortunate demise with demolition taking place between 1842-45, this engraving allows us to appreciate its architectural beauty forever preserved through artistry. Thanks to Bridgeman Images' preservation efforts, we can still admire this historical gem today and celebrate its significant role as part of London's rich heritage.
