It is probably Dunstan, archbishop of Cantorbury (909-988), wearing a choir dress, in use at the time of this portrait. The mitre has a shape similar to modern mitres, very tall and ending in two points, unlike the Saxon mitres, wider at the top. EDITORS COMMENTS
This stunning print captures Norman Archeveque in a choir dress of the 12th century, depicted in an enluminated manuscript with intricate details written with a goose feather. The vibrant yellow background adds a pop of color to the image, drawing attention to the Archbishop's elaborate attire.
Believed to be Dunstan, archbishop of Canterbury (909-988), this portrait showcases the choir dress commonly worn during that time period. The tall mitre with two pointed ends is reminiscent of modern mitres, distinguishing it from earlier Saxon styles which were wider at the top.
The copper engraving has been meticulously hand-colored, bringing out the rich hues and textures of the Archbishop's garment. This historical representation is part of "Images historiques des costumes des principaux peuples de l'Antiquite et du Middle Ages" by Robert Von Spalart, originally published in 1796.
As we admire this exquisite piece of artistry, we are transported back in time to an era where fashion was not just about style but also symbolized status and authority. Norman Archeveque's regal appearance serves as a reminder of the grandeur and sophistication prevalent in medieval times.
