EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases the grandeur of the dining room in Hill Hall, Essex. Taken from Giles Worsley's renowned book "England's Lost Houses" this image captures the essence of a bygone era. The photograph, captured by an English photographer from the 20th century, offers a glimpse into the architectural marvels of the 16th century. Originally built in the 1560s by Sir Thomas Smith, Hill Hall underwent significant renovations under Sir Reginald Blomfield's guidance starting in 1909. Mr and Mrs Charles Hunter, tenants of the Smith family at that time, were responsible for commissioning these changes. Notably, Blomfield transformed one particular space -the dining room- using a stunning ceiling acquired by the Hunters during their travels to Venice. However, tragedy struck when fire ravaged Hill Hall in 1969, leaving it gutted and forever altering its historical significance. This photograph allows us to appreciate what once was—a testament to Tudor architecture and Elizabethan design. The attention to detail is evident as we observe intricate Venetian architectural elements within this stately home's interior decor. Through this photograph taken by Bridgeman Images on behalf of Fine Art Finder, we are transported back in time to witness a piece of history frozen in time.
