EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases the Emblema of Cleopatra Selene, a remarkable piece from the late 1st century BC to early 1st century AD. Crafted by Roman artisans, this parcel-gilt and silver sculpture stands at an impressive height of 17.4 cm. The emblema depicts Cleopatra Selene II, also known as Cleopatra VIII of Egypt, who was the daughter of Greek Ptolemaic queen Cleopatra VII and Roman triumvir Mark Antony. The sculpture is raised from a single sheet and sculpted in high relief, portraying the bust of a young woman with exquisite detail. One cannot help but be captivated by her striking appearance. She wears an intricate elephant headdress over her head, complete with raised trunk and tapering tusks projecting forward. Her luxuriant curly hair cascades in two rows of thick serpentine locks framing her face. Cleopatra Selene's features are meticulously carved - from her smooth forehead merging into a slender nose to her large eyes with heavy upper lids that reveal delicate incised brows. Her small mouth boasts a full lower lip while her prominent chin adds to her allure. Adorned in a crenellated chiton along the collar and embellished himation draped gracefully around her shoulders, she exudes regality. The himation is further enhanced with gilt accents alongside elements such as scorpions, cobras, lionesses, lions, fruit, and wheat motifs. This extraordinary emblema serves as both an artistic masterpiece and historical artifact that allows us to glimpse into the fascinating life of Cleopatra Selene II during this ancient era.
