EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures the historic Wesleyan High School in Grahamstown, South Africa. Taken by an English photographer in the 19th century, this image showcases the impressive architecture of the school building. The Wesleyan High School was known for its excellent educational standards and served as a testament to the dedication of its teachers. Under the chairmanship of Hon George Wood, this English high school accommodated pupils from different backgrounds. It boasted separate classes for boarders and day scholars alike, with small class sizes ensuring individual attention. The premises included a kindergarten section that catered to younger children. The establishment of Wesleyan High School came at a significant cost but proved worth every penny. With exceptional facilities and dedicated staff members, it quickly gained distinction within South Africa's education system. The photograph also reveals that additional accommodation had been erected to house resident students who traveled from afar. This expansion allowed for an increased number of pupils attending examinations - both internal (250) and external (4000). As we admire this snapshot frozen in time, we are reminded of the rich history behind this educational institution that played a vital role in shaping young minds during its heyday in Grahamstown between 1880-1882.
