EDITORS COMMENTS
This photograph captures the essence of a west bedroom in Hill Hall, Essex. Taken from Giles Worsley's book "England's Lost Houses" this image showcases the timeless beauty of an era long gone. Built by Sir Thomas Smith in the 1560s, Hill Hall underwent major renovations by Sir Reginald Blomfield from 1909 for Mr and Mrs Charles Hunter. The tenants were lucky enough to enjoy this exquisite room adorned with wallpaper that was originally made for the Great Exhibition in 1951. The photograph transports us back to a time when grandeur and elegance were paramount. The intricate details of Elizabethan architecture are on full display, showcasing the craftsmanship of the Tudor period. The room is filled with history, as it witnessed both late and early 16th-century events. Despite its rich past, tragedy struck Hill Hall when it was gutted by fire in 1969. However, through this photograph, we can still appreciate its former glory. The Victorian wallpaper adds a touch of charm to the interior decor while providing insight into design trends during that era. This stately home exudes an air of sophistication that captivates all who lay eyes upon it. Thanks to English photographer Giles Worsley's skillful eye and Bridgeman Images' preservation efforts, we can admire this stunning piece of history captured forever in print.
