Created by the German School in the 15th century, this coloured woodcut is currently housed in the Bibliotheque de la Faculte de Medecine in Paris, France. Hortus Sanitatis is a Latin treatise that follows the medieval herbal tradition. It is believed to have been compiled by printer Jacob Meydenbach and printed in Mainz during 1491. Also known as Ortus Sanitatis (The Origin of Health), it expands on Johann Wonnecke von Kaub's Der Gart der Gesundheit, which was printed by Peter Schoeffer in Mainz in 1485. However, Hortus Sanitatis goes beyond herbs and includes sections dedicated to animals, birds, fish, and minerals.
