EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases a remarkable artifact from the late 19th century - a camel hair sleeping bag. Crafted by Jaeger, this unique piece was utilized by Alfred Leonard Purkis, an officer of the 43rd Company, Imperial Yeomanry, during the Boer War (1899-1902). Before his military service, Purkis led a life as a tenant farmer in Balsham, Cambridgeshire. His experiences on the battlefield were undoubtedly challenging and demanding, but this sleeping bag provided him with much-needed comfort and respite amidst harsh conditions. The intricate details of this photograph allow us to appreciate both its historical significance and craftsmanship. The softness and insulating properties of camel hair made it an ideal material for creating warm bedding suitable for soldiers stationed in colder regions. Purkis' dedication to serving his country did not end with the Boer War; he went on to serve as a captain in a Cavalry Remount Section during World War One (1914-1918) in Northern France. This speaks volumes about his commitment to duty and resilience throughout multiple conflicts. As we gaze upon this image, we are reminded of the sacrifices made by individuals like Purkis who dedicated their lives to protecting their homeland. It serves as a poignant reminder of the bravery exhibited by those who have served in armed forces throughout history.
