EDITORS COMMENTS
This print titled "A Cocoa Estate in Trinidad" by Frank Newbould offers a glimpse into the rich history of the British Empire. Commissioned by the Empire Marketing Board, this colour lithograph was created to promote sales of Empire-grown and Empire-made goods throughout Great Britain and its colonies. The image showcases a lush cocoa estate in Trinidad, beautifully capturing the vibrant landscape and agricultural practices of the time. The attention to detail is remarkable, with every leaf and tree branch meticulously depicted, immersing viewers in the tropical setting. Manchester Art Gallery proudly houses an impressive collection of artist-designed posters from this era. Acquiring over 200 posters in the 1930s, these powerful images serve as visual representations of various aspects of life within the British Empire – its people, places, and products. However, it is important to acknowledge that for contemporary audiences, these posters can evoke uncomfortable feelings due to their association with colonialism. They raise thought-provoking questions about how we perceive and address the legacies left behind by empires like Britain's. Nonetheless, this particular print remains a testament to Newbould's artistic talent and serves as a valuable historical artifact. Manchester Art Gallery continues to preserve such pieces for educational purposes while encouraging critical discussions surrounding our shared past. (Copyright: Manchester Art Gallery)
