"Dress ship" (colour photo)
8668580 "Dress ship" (colour photo) by English Photographer, (20th century); Private Collection; (add.info.: "Dress ship." In the Navy the custom of "dressing ship" for a ceremonial occasion has long persisted. This "dressing" consists of signalling flags and pendants triced up over the whole length of the ship. This tradition is only observed for such events as the celebration of the King's or Queen's Birthday, Empire Day, Accession Day or, as in our picture, a visit of Their Majesties to the Fleet. On this last occasion the ship is also "manned" by the crew, i.e. all hands assemble on the upper deck. This custom dates from the days when the presence of the crew on deck proved that they were not at their gunnery positions.
