7339920 Three figures using astronomical equipment in the Great Star Room or the Octagon Room, as it is known today, at the Royal Observatory., c.1676 (engraving) by Place, Francis (1647-1728); 46x61 cm; National Maritime Museum, London, UK; (add.info.: Creator: Francis Place after Robert Thacker
Three figures using astronomical equipment in the Great Star Room or the Octagon Room, as it is known today, at the Royal Observatory. To the left an observer is using a quadrant to carry out astronomical observations. While a seated figure, on the right, studies the sky through a telescope. Portraits of Charles II, whose support Sir Jonas Moore had crucially secured for the founding of an observatory at Greenwich, and James, Duke of York (later James II), can be seen in the background. This is a reproduction of one of twelve plates showing the Royal Observatory and its equipment that were produced by Francis Place, c. 1676, after drawings by Robert Thacker. The print series was commissioned by Sir Jonas Moore, a mathematician and one of the founders of the Royal Observatory, to commemorate the opening of the Observatory which was established to solve the problem of longitude in navigation.); © National Maritime Museum, Greenwich, London

EDITORS COMMENTS
This engraving captures a moment in history at the Royal Observatory, where three figures are immersed in their astronomical pursuits. In the Great Star Room, also known as the Octagon Room today, we see an observer meticulously using a quadrant to conduct celestial observations. On the other side, a seated figure gazes up at the night sky through a telescope, perhaps pondering the mysteries of the universe. In the background of this scene are portraits of Charles II and James, Duke of York (later James II), symbolic figures whose support was instrumental in establishing this prestigious observatory at Greenwich. The print is part of a series commissioned by Sir Jonas Moore to commemorate the opening of the Royal Observatory in 1676. As we gaze upon this intricate engraving by Francis Place after Robert Thacker, we are transported back in time to witness these early astronomers dedicated to solving navigation challenges related to longitude. Their passion for astronomy and dedication to scientific discovery is palpable in this image that continues to inspire awe and wonder centuries later.
