EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases a remarkable piece of military headgear from the late 19th century. The Forage cap, also known as a peaked pillbox, was specifically designed for warrant officers or senior non-commissioned officers in the West India Regiment. Crafted with exquisite attention to detail, this blue cloth cap features a black worsted corded button at its center, surrounded by eight eyelets of flat worsted braid. The edge of the cap is elegantly trimmed with a gold-colored twisted round cord, adding an air of prestige and authority. At the front, an intricately embroidered badge takes center stage within a gold wire wreath. This badge proudly displays half of a laurel and half of a palm encircling a blue silk Garter edged with gold wire and bearing the motto in golden wire letters: W I R. The inner band of this historic headpiece is made from brown leather and bears remnants of an aged paper label that hints at its past ownership and origin. The lining consists of padded scarlet silk while the peak is lined with green leather. Preserved by the National Army Museum in London, this textile and leather masterpiece offers us an intriguing glimpse into military fashion history. Its impeccable craftsmanship serves as a testament to both the skillful English artisans who created it and to those who wore it with pride during their service in the West India Regiment over 125 years ago.
