EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases a group of four exquisite miniatures from the 19th century, now held in a private collection. The miniatures are part of the Royal collection at Windsor Castle and depict prominent figures from the Cromwell family. At the top, we see Elizabeth Cromwell, Oliver Cromwell's mother, portrayed in stunning detail by John Hoskins. On the left is Mary, Oliver's third daughter who later became Lady Fauconberg; her likeness was masterfully captured by Lawrence Crosse. To the right is Elizabeth, Oliver's second daughter who married as Mrs Claypole; Samuel Cooper skillfully immortalized her image with his brushstrokes. Lastly, at the bottom is Bridget, Oliver's eldest daughter who went on to become Mrs Ireton and then Mrs Fleetwood; Lawrence Crosse again demonstrates his artistic talent in capturing her essence. These remarkable miniatures were featured as illustrations for Samuel Rawson Gardiner's book "Oliver Cromwell" published by Goupil in 1899. The attention to detail and skilled craftsmanship evident in these engravings make them truly exceptional works of art. This print captures not only the beauty of these miniatures but also provides a glimpse into English history through one family's legacy during this significant period. It serves as a testament to both artistic excellence and historical importance that continues to captivate viewers even today.
