HM the King inspecting aircraft, Thorney Island (colour photo)
8668638 HM the King inspecting aircraft, Thorney Island (colour photo) by English Photographer, (20th century); Private Collection; (add.info.: HM the King inspecting aircraft, Thorney Island. HM King George VI is shown at Thorney Island, Hants, on 9 May 1938, inspecting aircraft which were lined up with their crews. This ceremonial parade of aircraft and subsequent inspection by His Majesty bears resemblance to the inspection of the ranks in the Army and to the review of the Fleet in the Navy. His Majesty, before flying to Thorney Island, had previously visited three other RAF stations, those at Northolt, Harwell and Upavon, completing the whole journey in his private Airspeed "Envoy." Throughout a large part of the day, His Majesty piloted the plane himself. He was dressed in the uniform of Marshal of the Royal Air Force.
