Manchester Art Gallery holds a fascinating collection of artist-designed posters, Commissioned by the British government's Empire Marketing Board between 1926 and 1933. The EMB's main function was to increase sales of Empire-grown and Empire-made goods throughout Great Britain, its Dominions and its Colonies. One aspect of its activities was a poster campaign that was designed to turn Britons into Empire-conscious consumers. Over 200 posters were acquired by Manchester Art Gallery in the 1930s. The posters strong images illustrate the Empire's people, places and products. However, for a contemporary audience, the posters sometimes express uncomfortable beliefs and raise difficult questions about the legacies of the Empire today.); © Manchester Art Gallery

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print titled "Irrigating Currant Vines - Australia" transports us to the lush landscapes of early 20th century Australia. Captured by Archibald Bertram Webb, this colour lithograph showcases the beauty and intricacy of vineyard irrigation in vibrant detail. Commissioned by the Empire Marketing Board, this artwork was part of a larger campaign aimed at promoting sales of goods from the British Empire across its dominions and colonies. Manchester Art Gallery proudly houses an impressive collection of artist-designed posters from this era, shedding light on both the strengths and complexities of Britain's imperial past. The image itself is a testament to human ingenuity and agricultural prowess. The currant vines stretch as far as the eye can see, their verdant leaves contrasting against the arid Australian soil. Water cascades through an intricate network of channels, nourishing these precious plants that will eventually yield succulent fruits for consumption. While appreciating such historical artworks allows us to marvel at past achievements, it also prompts reflection on our present-day understanding of empire and its consequences. These posters serve as powerful reminders that legacies are multifaceted; they can inspire admiration while simultaneously raising questions about social justice and equality. As we gaze upon this mesmerizing print, let us appreciate not only its artistic merit but also engage in meaningful conversations about our shared history and how it continues to shape our world today.
