Do You Know: Why do men raise their hats? (colour litho)

8668141 Do You Know: Why do men raise their hats? (colour litho) by English School, (20th century); Private Collection; (add.info.: Why do men raise their hats? Diligent searchings have not entirely unravelled the beginnings of the custom, but two reasons are advanced. The first is a legacy from the days of chivalry, when a knight removed his casque in the presence of a lady, or when the Queen of Beauty crowned him for his prowess after a tournament. The other suggests a mannerism adopted by gallants in the 17th century, of raising their extravagantly plumed hats, not as an act of courtesy, but to call attention to their fine feathers. Until midway through this century, gentlemen jealously kept on their hats except in the presence of the king. EDITORS COMMENTS
This colour lithograph print titled "Do You Know: Why do men raise their hats?" by the English School from the 20th century offers a fascinating insight into the historical origins of this age-old custom. The diligent searchings depicted in the illustration have not entirely unraveled the beginnings of this tradition, but two intriguing reasons are advanced. The first reason harks back to the days of chivalry, where knights would remove their helmets in the presence of a lady or when crowned by the Queen of Beauty for their prowess after a tournament. The second reason suggests that gallants in the 17th century raised their extravagantly plumed hats not as an act of courtesy, but to draw attention to their fine feathers. Until midway through that century, gentlemen were known to keep their hats on except in front of royalty. This print is part of a set of 50 "Do You Know?" cigarette cards issued by Carreras in 1939 and beautifully captures both historical charm and educational value. It serves as a reminder of how customs and manners have evolved over time, shedding light on our rich cultural heritage.
