Page from Regime et Gouvernement des Princes (colour litho)
961141 Page from Regime et Gouvernement des Princes (colour litho) by Flemish School, (15th century) (after); Private Collection; (add.info.: Choice examples of book illumination. Facsimles from illuminated manuscripts and illustrated books of early date. A Prince receiving an envoy, from the Gouvernement des Princes, written about 1490. The Regime et Gouvernement des Princes, a text book of statecraft for young kings, was written for Charles d Angouleme between 1480 and 1490. The illustration reproduced belongs in its character to the new Flemish School, but a trace of the now fast disappearing Gothic. The elaborate backgrounds of the new school are here, lending an air of completeness to the picture, and the improvement in drawing necessitated by the use of the camaieu method is visible. EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases a page from "Regime et Gouvernement des Princes" a remarkable colour lithograph created by the Flemish School in the 15th century. Housed in a private collection, this print offers us a glimpse into the world of book illumination and early illustrations. The depicted scene portrays an envoy presenting himself before a prince, capturing an important moment of diplomacy and power dynamics. This particular illustration is part of "Gouvernement des Princes" written around 1490 as a textbook on statecraft for young kings, specifically commissioned for Charles d'Angouleme. Although belonging to the new Flemish School, this artwork still retains traces of the fading Gothic style. The intricate backgrounds characteristic of the new school enhance the overall composition's richness and depth, while improvements in drawing techniques are evident due to the use of camaieu method. Published in "The World's Great Classics" by Library Committee and printed by The Colonial Press in New York & London back in 1899, this image has been skillfully captured by Bridgeman Images for Fine Art Finder. It serves as both an educational resource and an exquisite piece of art that allows us to appreciate the craftsmanship and artistic evolution during this period.
