EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases a remarkable pair of Ceylonese ebony, ivory, and specimen exotic wood-inlaid occasional tables. Created in the second quarter of the 19th century by English School after a design by Thomas King, these exquisite pieces are now housed in a private collection. The hexagonal tops of these tables feature central ivory roundels that emit swirling segments of various exotic woods such as palm, wenge, macassar ebony, and sabicu. These mesmerizing patterns are further enhanced by feather-banding that divides them elegantly. Adding to their allure is a convenient frieze drawer located just below the tops. Supported by twin foliate C-scrolls and resting on lotus-bordered plinth bases terminating in four scrolled feet, each table stands at an impressive height of 28 inches (71 cm). With dimensions measuring 21 inches wide (53.5 cm) and 18o inches deep (46.5 cm), they exude both grandeur and functionality. This photograph beautifully captures the intricate craftsmanship and attention to detail exhibited in these rare Sri Lankan treasures. The combination of ebony, ivory, and assorted exotic woods creates an enchanting visual feast for art enthusiasts worldwide.
