Popular Superstitions: Lucky white heather (colour litho)

8668762 Popular Superstitions: Lucky white heather (colour litho) by English School, (20th century); Private Collection; (add.info.: Lucky white heather. White heather owes its reputation for being lucky to the fact that white was, in past ages, regarded as a sacred colour. Thus the Druids wore white robes, and white dresses are worn by brides to this day. Our night raiment, too, until the modern introduction of coloured pyjamas, has always been white, for of old it was held that the sacred colour protected our sleeping bodies from evil spirits. White varieties of certain species of animals (particularly horses) and flowers were similarly regarded with a sacredness which was increased by their comparative rareness. White heather, it may be remarked, was formerly far rarer than it is to-day. EDITORS COMMENTS
This stunning print captures the essence of one of the most popular superstitions - lucky white heather. In this 20th-century colour lithograph, we see the delicate white flowers that have long been associated with good fortune and protection from evil spirits. White heather's reputation for luck stems from its connection to the sacred colour white, which has been revered throughout history. The Druids wore white robes, brides don white dresses, and even our night attire was traditionally white to ward off malevolent forces while we slept. In ancient times, rare white varieties of animals and flowers were considered especially sacred, further enhancing their mystical properties. White heather was once a scarce find, adding to its allure as a symbol of luck and protection. This illustration is part of a set of cigarette cards on Popular Superstitions issued in 1930 by Godfrey Phillips. It serves as a reminder of the enduring fascination with superstitions and the belief in objects like lucky white heather that bring positive energy into our lives. As you gaze upon this enchanting image, may it inspire you to embrace the magic and mystery that surrounds us every day.
