Preggio e sol d un alma forte, f. 6v from Aditionall [sic] songs for Rinaldo

5321235 Preggio A sol d un alma forte, f.6v from Aditionall [sic] songs for Rinaldo, c.1717 (pen & ink on paper) by Handel, George Frederick (1685-1759); 24x30 cm; Gerald Coke Handel Collection, Foundling Museum, London; (add.info.: Black ink on 10-stave paper. A contemporary manuscript containing four arias in full score. At the head of f.1 is the title aditionall [sic] songs for Rinaldo 1717, in ink, apparently in a different hand; the copyist has been identified as RM 4 [see Hallische HAandel-Ausgabe (HHA)]. The critical commentary of the Rinaldo 1711 edition identifies the present manuscript as source R (HHA II/4.1, p.257).The four arias are reproduced as additional arias in the HHA critical edition of Rinaldo 1711, although only two (Ogni tua bella stilla and Sorte, amor) are listed in HWV. The Shaftesbury manuscript entitled La Lucretia containing various opera arias [see accession no.248] also contains the same four arias, and is listed by HHA as source S.On the last page of the manuscript are eight bars of unidentified music in the hand of Jennens. Together with the manuscript is a reprint by First Edition Bookshop of the article Recently-discovered Handel Manuscripts (Musical Times, April 1937) by William C. Smith, who had examined the manuscript whilst still in the possession of Cecil Hopkinson, and four pages of notes in the hand of W.C. Smith.); eGerald Coke Handel Collection, Foundling Museum; German, out of copyright

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases "Preggio e sol d un alma forte, f. 6v from Additional Songs for Rinaldo" by George Frederick Handel. The artwork, created in c. 1717 using pen and ink on paper, measures 24x30 cm and is part of the esteemed Gerald Coke Handel Collection at the Foundling Museum in London. The image reveals a black ink manuscript on 10-stave paper, containing four arias in full score. At the top of page one, we find the title "Additional Songs for Rinaldo 1717" written in ink by another hand. It has been identified that RM4 was responsible for copying this manuscript according to Hallische Handel-Ausgabe (HHA). Interestingly, two additional sources are mentioned alongside this manuscript: source R from HHA's critical edition of Rinaldo 1711 and a Shaftesbury manuscript titled La Lucretia which also contains these four arias. At the end of the document, eight bars of unidentified music penned by Jennens can be seen. Accompanying this remarkable piece is a reprint article by William C. Smith titled "Recently-discovered Handel Manuscripts" from Musical Times (April 1937), along with notes handwritten by W. C. Smith himself. This exquisite print not only captures an extraordinary musical composition but also provides valuable insights into its historical context and provenance within the world-renowned Gerald Coke Handel Collection at Foundling Museum.
