Presentation sword, Brigadier General Duncan MacDougall, 1836 (sword, presentation)

5928921 Presentation sword, Brigadier General Duncan MacDougall, 1836 (sword, presentation) by English School, (19th century); National Army Museum, London; (add.info.: Presentation sword, Brigadier General Duncan MacDougall, 1836.
Presentation sword engraved with a dedication to Brigadier General Duncan MacDougall (1787-1862), Quarter Master General of the British Auxiliary Legion during the Carlist Wars in Spain, 1836.
Between 1835 and 1838 eight thousand British officers and men fought as the British Legion in the Carlist Wars in Spain. Little credit accrued to this force which was basically intervening in a Spanish civil war and it was withdrawn from the conflict in 1838. It is likely that the sword was presented by the field officers serving under General MacDougall that year.
The sword itself is highly ornate and has the unusual decoration on the blade of a scroll etched with the names of all the officers who subscribed to its purchase. It also bears the MacDougall Clan motto, Vincere vel Mori, meaning to Conquer or to DieA.); eNational Army Museum; English, out of copyright

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases a remarkable piece of history - the Presentation sword belonging to Brigadier General Duncan MacDougall. Created in 1836, this ornate sword holds great significance as it was presented to General MacDougall by his field officers during his service as Quarter Master General of the British Auxiliary Legion in the Carlist Wars in Spain. The Carlist Wars, which took place between 1835 and 1838, saw thousands of British officers and men fighting under the banner of the British Legion. However, their efforts went largely unrecognized as they were essentially intervening in a Spanish civil war. Consequently, the force was withdrawn from the conflict in 1838. The intricately designed sword itself is a testament to craftsmanship and prestige. Its blade features an exquisite scroll etched with the names of all officers who contributed towards its purchase. Additionally, it proudly bears the motto of Clan MacDougall - Vincere vel Mori, meaning "to Conquer or to Die". Preserved at London's National Army Museum, this photograph allows us to appreciate not only the beauty but also the historical significance behind this extraordinary artifact. It serves as a reminder of General MacDougall's leadership during tumultuous times and pays tribute to all those who fought alongside him under challenging circumstances.
