EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures the haunting history of the prison colony of Belle-Ile-en-Mer in the early 1900s. Originally established as an agricultural and maritime penitentiary in 1848, this former prison was transformed into a correctional center for juvenile offenders in 1880. The young settlers at Belle-Ile-en-Mer were trained in various maritime trades on a school ship called the City of Palais, which was docked within the establishment's courtyard.
The harsh conditions imposed on these young inmates eventually led to a mutiny in 1934, with 56 settlers attempting to flee before being recaptured. In this image, we see the solemn salute of these troubled youths to the flag, symbolizing their confinement and struggle for freedom.
Despite its dark past, Belle-Ile-en-Mer stands as a poignant reminder of France's penal history and efforts towards rehabilitation. This postcard from CAP (Company of Photomechanical Arts) serves as both a historical document and a testament to the resilience of those who once called this place home.
