The Profligate Behaviour of Chares (litho)

8660741 The Profligate Behaviour of Chares (litho) by Stewart, Allan (1865-1951); Private Collection; (add.info.: The Profligate Behaviour of Chares. Towards the end of the Social War (BC 358-355), Chares, the admiral to whom the Athenian fleet had been entrusted, ceased to concern himself any further about the prosecution of the struggle, and roamed carelessly over the seas, attended by bands of singers, dancers and courtesans. Thus the war was humiliating and exhaustive to Athens, whose power thenceforth rapidly declined. Illustration for Hutchinson's History of the Nations (Hutchinson, c.1920). EDITORS COMMENTS
The Profligate Behaviour of Chares captured in this lithograph by Allan Stewart depicts a pivotal moment in history during the Social War. Chares, the Athenian admiral entrusted with leading the fleet, is shown here neglecting his duties and indulging in frivolous activities with singers, dancers, and courtesans. This reckless behavior ultimately led to Athens' humiliation and decline in power. The image serves as a stark reminder of the consequences of irresponsible leadership and selfish actions during times of war. The anxiety and concern felt by the Athenians as they watched their once great city-state fall from grace is palpable in this scene. Through digital enhancement, this historical illustration has been brought to life for modern audiences to reflect on the lessons that can be learned from past mistakes. The black and white contrast adds a sense of timelessness to the artwork, emphasizing its importance as a piece of European history. As we gaze upon this print, we are reminded of the impact that individual choices can have on an entire society. Let us learn from Chares' profligate behavior and strive for responsible leadership and selfless actions in our own lives.
