EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases a detailed section of the Psalter with Sarum use calendar, dating back to the 15th century. Created by an English School artist, this masterpiece measures 20.6x18.5 cm and is currently housed at The University of St. Andrews in Scotland. The Psalter, also known as the St Andrews Psalter, features a Sarum rite calendar alongside Psalms 1-150. Written in Latin by an English hand, this particular copy follows the usage of the Book of Common Prayer. The illuminated initials adorning psalms 1,26,38,52,68,80,97 and 109 are exquisitely painted with vibrant colors on gold-decorated backgrounds. Borders adorned with intricate illustrations of flowers, men, birds, monkeys and mythical creatures such as dragons and griffins further enhance its ornate beauty. While some Canticles are missing from this edition (specifically verses six onwards), the calendar remains intact without any defacement. This stunning piece exemplifies medieval manuscript artistry at its finest. With its religious significance and exquisite decorative elements including floral patterns and griffins among others; it serves as a testament to Christian devotion during that era. Preserved within these pages lies not only a rich history but also an artistic marvel that continues to inspire awe today.
