On each side of the river a participant held the wire in one hand whilst an iron rod was dipped into the river with the other. When the circuit was completed the Leyden Jar discharged its current. The shock was felt by the participants on both sides of the river. From Les Merveilles de la Science, published 1870.); French, out of copyright

EDITORS COMMENTS
This photograph captures a significant moment in scientific history - an experiment conducted by the Royal Society in 1747. The image is taken from Les Merveilles de la Science, a publication from 1870 that showcases remarkable scientific discoveries. The experiment aimed to determine whether electric current could be transmitted across the River Thames using an electrostatic generator and a Leyden Jar. Participants on both sides of the river held a wire connected to the jar with one hand while dipping an iron rod into the water with their other hand. When the circuit was completed, the Leyden Jar discharged its current, resulting in a shocking experience for all involved. This historic event not only demonstrates early advancements in electricity but also highlights the dedication of scientists during this era to push boundaries and explore new possibilities. The participants' reactions undoubtedly mirrored their astonishment at witnessing electrical energy being successfully transmitted over such a vast expanse of water. Through this evocative illustration, we are transported back to eighteenth-century England, where groundbreaking experiments like these paved the way for future inventions and technological advancements. It serves as a reminder of how far we have come in our understanding and utilization of electricity since this pioneering moment captured on Westminster Bridge over two centuries ago.
