8668732 Sea Adventure: The buccaneers at Porto Bello (colour litho) by English School, (20th century); Private Collection; (add.info.: The buccaneers at Porto Bello. Originally a buccaneer was one who dried and smoked meat in Indian fashion on a boucan, a kind of hurdle. The name buccaneer was subsequently given to European adventurers who thus prepared their meat, and went sea-roving against the Spaniards in the Caribbean Sea. Of the wealthy Spanish settlements, Porto Bello was the most tempting. Henry Morgan, who died a knight and Governor of Jamaica, laid the foundation of his fame and fortune there in 1668. Learning that an expedition against Jamaica was being fitted out at Porto Bello, he attacked against huge odds, the gallantry of his little band being equalled only by their cruelty. the proposed invasion was wrecked, and a huge booty captured.
