Sea Adventure: Hawke at Quiberon (colour litho)
8668735 Sea Adventure: Hawke at Quiberon (colour litho) by English School, (20th century); Private Collection; (add.info.: Hawke at Quiberon. In 1759 the French sent a squadron from Toulon to join the fleet under Admiral Conflans to sweep the English Channel, and land 50,000 troops in England. Boscawen dispersed the Toulon squadron and Admiral Hawke rightly surmised that the intended rendezvous was Quiberon Bay. Conflans declined battle and eluded Hawke by relying on local knowledge of the notorious strong tides, rocks, and reefs. Hawke gave chase in spite of unreliable charts. The master of the Royal George protested, but Hawke replied "You have done your duty in showing the danger." A gale sprang up, several ships were wrecked, including the French Admiral's flagship, and the invasion plan was shattered.
