Sea Adventure: The mutiny of the "Bounty" (colour litho)

8668741 Sea Adventure: The mutiny of the "Bounty" (colour litho) by English School, (20th century); Private Collection; (add.info.: The mutiny of the "Bounty." When HM store ship Bounty was sent to the South Seas in 1787 the Admiralty made the mistake of putting her under the command of William Bligh, a fine seaman but a born bully. He goaded his crew - none too good to begin with - into mutiny, but when they turned him adrift in the cutter he got his loyal followers 3,618 miles to safety by the most wonderful boat voyage in history. Many of the mutineers died violent deaths, but some reached Pitcairn Island, repented, and founded a model colony there. Mutinous Mutiny

EDITORS COMMENTS
This colour lithograph captures the dramatic scene of the mutiny of the "Bounty" in stunning detail. The image depicts the moment when Captain William Bligh, a notorious bully, is set adrift by his own crew in a small cutter during their rebellion against his harsh leadership. Despite being left to fend for himself in treacherous waters, Bligh manages to navigate over 3,600 miles to safety with his loyal followers in what would become one of the most remarkable boat voyages in history. The mutineers who remained on board faced violent fates, while some eventually found refuge on Pitcairn Island where they established a repentant and peaceful colony. This illustration is part of a series of cigarette cards on Sea Adventure issued by Hignett Brothers in 1939, offering viewers a glimpse into this gripping tale from maritime history. The vivid colours and intricate details bring this historic event to life, allowing us to witness the tension and turmoil that unfolded aboard the ill-fated "Bounty." Through this artwork, we are reminded of the power struggles and human drama that can unfold at sea, making it an enduring symbol of adventure and betrayal on the high seas.
