Sea Adventure: The original Robinson Crusoe (colour litho)

Alexander Selkirk shipped as sailing master in one of Dampier's buccaneer ships, the Cinque Ports in 1703. Having quarrelled with everybody on board, he was left in 1704, at his own request, on the lonely island of Juan Fernandez off the Chilean coast. There he lived entirely alone for over four years until taken off by Captain Woodes Rogers who was then engaged in his famous cruise with Dampier in the Pacific. Selkirk joined the privateers and completed the cruise with them. He was the original of Daniel Defoe's famous story The Adventures of Robinson Crusoe.
