EDITORS COMMENTS
This sepia-toned print captures the tragic shipwreck of Prince William, as illustrated in Cassell's Illustrated History of England. The engraving, created by an English School artist in the 19th century, depicts the haunting scene with great detail and emotion. The image portrays the devastating moment when William Adelin, son and heir of Henry I of England, met his untimely demise. Known as "the Aethling" he drowned along with numerous victims aboard the White Ship that sank in the English Channel during the 12th century. The boat, also referred to as La Blanche Nef, was a royal vessel that tragically succumbed to its watery grave near Barfleur. This poignant artwork from The Stapleton Collection evokes a sense of sorrow and loss. It serves as a somber reminder of how even those born into privilege are not immune to tragedy. The detailed depiction invites viewers to reflect on the fragility of life and contemplate our own mortality. As we gaze upon this historical illustration captured by Bridgeman Images' lens, we cannot help but feel drawn into this heart-wrenching event from centuries past. It is through such visual records that history comes alive before our eyes – reminding us that stories like these should never be forgotten or relegated to mere footnotes in textbooks.
