Manchester Art Gallery holds a fascinating collection of artist-designed posters, Commissioned by the British government's Empire Marketing Board between 1926 and 1933. The EMB's main function was to increase sales of Empire-grown and Empire-made goods throughout Great Britain, its Dominions and its Colonies. One aspect of its activities was a poster campaign that was designed to turn Britons into Empire-conscious consumers.
Over 200 posters were acquired by Manchester Art Gallery in the 1930s. The posters strong images illustrate the Empire's people, places and products. However, for a contemporary audience, the posters sometimes express uncomfortable beliefs and raise difficult questions about the legacies of the Empire today.); © Manchester Art Gallery

EDITORS COMMENTS
The print titled "A Sword Against, from the series The Empire Stands for Peace" captures a powerful message of transformation and hope. Created by an English School artist in the 20th century, this colour lithograph is part of a larger collection commissioned by the Empire Marketing Board (EMB) and printed by Eyre & Spottiswoode for HMSO. In this particular artwork, we see a depiction of swords being turned into plowshares and spears into pruning hooks. The full text accompanying the image quotes: "They shall beat their swords into plowshares, and their spears into pruning hooks: Nation shall not lift up a sword against Nation, neither shall they learn war any more". This quote emphasizes the desire for peace and unity among nations. Manchester Art Gallery proudly holds an intriguing assortment of artist-designed posters acquired in the 1930s as part of EMB's poster campaign. These posters aimed to promote Empire-grown and Empire-made goods throughout Great Britain, its Dominions, and Colonies. While these images showcase people, places, and products from the British Empire at that time, they also raise challenging questions about its legacy today. This thought-provoking print serves as a reminder that even amidst conflict or division, there is always potential for change and progress towards peace. It invites viewers to reflect on our collective responsibility to create a world where nations no longer resort to violence but instead work together harmoniously.
