EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases "Vieni o caro che senza il suo core, f. 7r from Additional [sic] songs for Rinaldo" a remarkable piece by George Frederick Handel. The artwork, measuring 24x30 cm, is part of the esteemed Gerald Coke Handel Collection at the Foundling Museum in London. Rendered in pen and ink on paper, this black ink masterpiece features ten-stave paper with four arias presented in full score. At the top of page one, an inscription reads "additional [sic] songs for Rinaldo 1717" possibly written by a different hand. Scholars have identified RM4 as the copyist responsible for this manuscript. The critical commentary on Handel's Rinaldo edition from 1711 recognizes this particular manuscript as source R (HHA II/4.1, p. 257). Two of the reproduced arias - "Ogni tua bella stilla" and "Sorte, amor" - are listed in HWV; however, all four can be found as additional arias in HHA's critical edition of Rinaldo 1711. Interestingly, the last page of this manuscript contains eight bars of unidentified music penned by Jennens himself. Accompanying the print is also a reprint article by William C. Smith titled "Recently-discovered Handel Manuscripts" from Musical Times (April 1937), along with notes handwritten by W. C. Smith. This extraordinary photograph provides us with an intimate glimpse into Handel's creative process and offers valuable insights into his renowned opera compositions like never before.
