7341739 The York Convict Hulk in Portsmouth Harbour with another hulk beyond, 1833 (graphite) by Cooke, Edward William (1811-80); 10.2x24.4 cm; National Maritime Museum, London, UK; (add.info.: Creator: Edward William Cooke
This drawing is inscribed by the artist 'The York Convict Hulk and lazaretto, Portsmouth Harbour, July 4 1833'. The further inscription on the mount stating it is from the collection of J. R. Cooke is in the hand of John Munday, formerly of the National Maritime Museum and the modern biographer of Cooke, who knew various Cooke descendants over many years. Essentially the drawing repeats the composition, (but presumably on the spot at a later date) of the engraving of the 'York' dated 1828 which forms part of Cooke's series 'Shipping and Craft' , completed in 1829.); © National Maritime Museum, Greenwich, London

EDITORS COMMENTS
This graphite drawing by Edward William Cooke captures the imposing presence of The York Convict Hulk in Portsmouth Harbour in 1833. The intricate details and skilled hand of the artist bring to life this historical scene, showcasing not only the hulk itself but also another hulk beyond it.
The inscription on the drawing indicates that it was created on July 4, 1833, adding a sense of authenticity and timelessness to the piece. The inclusion of a lazaretto further adds to the atmosphere of confinement and isolation depicted in this maritime setting.
Cooke's attention to detail is evident in every line and shading, creating a sense of depth and realism that draws viewers into this moment from over a century ago. The composition echoes an earlier engraving by Cooke from 1828, showing his dedication to capturing these scenes with precision and accuracy.
As we gaze upon this print, we are transported back in time to witness a glimpse of England's past - a reminder of the country's rich maritime history and its connection to transportation, trade, and even imprisonment. This drawing serves as both a work of art and a historical document, preserving for future generations a snapshot of life in early nineteenth-century England.
