EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases a remarkable piece of equestrian history - the Chanfron in Maximilian style, dating back to around 1510. Crafted by the German School in the 16th century, this steel masterpiece measures an impressive 59.2x33.2x10.1 cm and is currently housed at the Cleveland Museum of Art in Ohio, USA. The chanfron served as both protection and adornment for horses, covering their forehead and face with a contoured plate of steel. This particular example was forged as one solid piece, possibly originating from Nuremberg during a transitional period between Gothic and fluted armors introduced by Emperor Maximilian. Noteworthy features include two holes on each side for accommodating the horse's ears, sometimes reinforced with riveted earpieces. The hinge positioned at the top allowed for attaching a crest plate to further enhance its decorative appeal. Gifted to the museum by Mr. and Mrs. John L. Severance, this exquisite artifact represents not only military prowess but also exemplifies meticulous metalwork craftsmanship prevalent during that era. As we admire this stunning relic from centuries past, let us appreciate its significance in safeguarding warhorses while adding an air of grandeur to their appearance on battlefields or ceremonial occasions alike. A testament to human ingenuity and our enduring bond with these majestic creatures throughout history.
