The formation of a solid body of hoplites (heavy-armed soldiers), armed with long spears, was known as a phalanx among the Greeks, and was brought to perfection by Alexander of Macedon (c 330 BC). He divided the phalanx into units corresponding to the modern divisions, brigades and regiments, the formation being a line of battalion masses, supported by clouds of irregular light troops, bowmen, slingers and the rest.
