EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures the Lambton Family during their time in Italy in 1797. Painted by Augusto Nicodemo, it showcases the prominent British family consisting of William Henry Lambton, a respected Member of Parliament representing Durham, and his wife Anne Barbara Frances Villiers, daughter of George Villiers, the 4th Earl of Jersey. The image portrays a grand scene with the family standing against a picturesque Italian backdrop. The father stands tall and distinguished, exuding authority and confidence. His wife radiates elegance and grace as she stands beside him. Their eldest son John George is depicted as an important figure who would later become Earl of Durham. This portrait reflects not only the beauty of its subjects but also serves as a testament to their adventurous spirit as they embarked on a tour across Europe. It is evident that this journey was significant for them as they are captured in fine attire befitting their status. Sadly, William Henry Lambton's life was cut short due to consumption just months after this painting was completed. He found his final resting place at Livorno's old English cemetery in Italy. Through this remarkable print from Bridgeman Images' collection, we are transported back in time to witness the splendor and legacy left behind by the Lambton Family during their travels through Italy over two centuries ago.
