5978256 Exhibition koro, c.1873 (bronze) by Suzuki Masayoshi (fl.c.1873); height: 190 cm; Private Collection; (add.info.: With dark green-brown patination and formed from several different components comprising a cover in the form of monkeys cowering underneath a large rock on which is perched an eagle with its wings outspread, an ovoid body with two lobed panels depicting on one side Chinese figures including the three heroes of the Chinese tale Sangokushi, (in Chinese, Sanguozhi), Kan u, Chohi and Gentoku (Guanyu, Zhangfei and Xuande), and on the other shishi with rocks and peonies, the panels with a border of fine low-relief ornament, the rest of the surface of the body with scattered floral ornament, the top border of the body and the border of the lid with phoenix and dragon medallions, the body applied with two handles in the form of dragons and resting on a domed base with lappet ornament supported on an openwork fruiting branch of peach, this in turn supported on a circular stand with six lappet-shaped feet resting on the circular base which is worked in the centre between the six legs with rocks and shishi, the lower border of the base with lappet ornament, signed in cast characters in a rectangular cartouche underneath the body Tokyo no ju Suzuki Masayoshi zo [made by Suzuki Masayoshi of Tokyo], the whole resting on a specially manufactured wood plinth decorated with porcelain plaques bearing the crest of the owners (see below)

This print showcases the exquisite "Exhibition koro" created by Suzuki Masayoshi in approximately 1873. Standing at an impressive height of 190 cm, this bronze masterpiece is a true testament to the artist's skill and creativity. The koro features a stunning dark green-brown patination and is composed of various components. The cover takes the form of monkeys cowering beneath a large rock, with an eagle majestically perched on top, its wings gracefully outspread. The ovoid body boasts two lobed panels depicting Chinese figures, including the legendary heroes Kan u, Chohi, and Gentoku from the tale Sangokushi. On the other side of the body, shishi (mythical lion-like creatures) are depicted amidst rocks and peonies. Delicate low-relief ornamentation borders these panels while scattered floral motifs adorn the rest of the surface. Dragon-shaped handles embellish each side of this extraordinary piece which rests upon a domed base adorned with lappet ornamentation supported by a fruiting branch of peach. The circular stand features six lappet-shaped feet resting on a base intricately worked with rocks and shishi. Signed by Suzuki Masayoshi himself in cast characters underneath Tokyo no ju (made by Suzuki Masayoshi of Tokyo), this Exhibition koro is truly one-of-a-kind. Accompanied by a specially manufactured wood plinth decorated with porcelain plaques bearing their owner's crest, it stands as both an artistic marvel and historical treasure.
