Manchester Art Gallery holds a fascinating collection of artist-designed posters, Commissioned by the British government's Empire Marketing Board between 1926 and 1933. The EMB's main function was to increase sales of Empire-grown and Empire-made goods throughout Great Britain, its Dominions and its Colonies. One aspect of its activities was a poster campaign that was designed to turn Britons into Empire-conscious consumers. Over 200 posters were acquired by Manchester Art Gallery in the 1930s. The posters strong images illustrate the Empire's people, places and products. However, for a contemporary audience, the posters sometimes express uncomfortable beliefs and raise difficult questions about the legacies of the Empire today.); © Manchester Art Gallery

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print titled "A Flock of Merino Sheep - Australia" transports us to the vast landscapes of Australia, showcasing the country's wealth in wheat and wool. Taken from Archibald Bertram Webb's series "Australia's Wealth of Wheat and Wool" this colour lithograph captures a flock of majestic Merino sheep grazing peacefully against a backdrop of rolling hills. Commissioned by the Empire Marketing Board and printed by Waterlow & Sons Ltd for HMSO, this artwork is part of Manchester Art Gallery's remarkable collection of artist-designed posters. Created between 1926 and 1933, these posters were intended to promote sales of goods grown and made within the British Empire. With over 200 acquired by Manchester Art Gallery in the 1930s, they serve as powerful visual representations that aimed to foster an Empire-conscious consumer base. However, viewing these historical pieces through a contemporary lens raises important questions about the legacies left behind by colonialism. While these images depict people, places, and products from across the Empire with strong visuals, they also reflect uncomfortable beliefs held during that time. As we admire this stunning photograph today, let it remind us not only of Australia's natural beauty but also prompt us to reflect on our complex relationship with history. The juxtaposition between admiration for artistic skill and acknowledgment of past injustices challenges us to confront difficult truths while appreciating artistry that transcends time.
