Shipping at anchor offshore in a calm sea; evening light, c. 1650-60 (oil on panel)
3552367 Shipping at anchor offshore in a calm sea; evening light, c.1650-60 (oil on panel) by Dubbels, Hendrick (1620/1-76); 53x66 cm; Manchester Art Gallery, UK; (add.info.: Cappelle, Jan van de (attributed to)
In this fine seascape by Hendrik Dubbels a large vessel lies at anchor on a glassy sea, under a cloudy sky. In the
foreground, a lone figure with a basket strapped to his back walks purposefully along the shore. A fishing pole sticks
out of the water just in front of him. The shallows are crowded with shipping, while other vessels are scattered in the
distance. Dubbels lived and worked all his life in Amsterdam. He was active as an independent painter from as early
1641, when he was only twenty or twenty-one. His early work is characterised by the restricted palette typical of the
tonal phase in Dutch painting, so it is likely that this refined, brighter, quite golden panel was painted between
about 1650 and 1660, when he was employed in the studio of Simon de Vlieger (c. 1650-53), and had close contact
with Jan van de Cappelle and Willem van de Velde II.); © Manchester Art Gallery ; Bequeathed by Mr and Mrs Assheton-Bennett

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures a serene scene of shipping at anchor offshore in a calm sea, illuminated by the soft glow of evening light. Painted by Hendrick Dubbels around 1650-60, this oil on panel artwork showcases his mastery in depicting maritime landscapes. The focal point of the composition is a large vessel peacefully resting on the glassy surface of the sea, surrounded by other ships scattered in the distance. In the foreground, a lone figure with a basket strapped to his back walks purposefully along the shore, adding a sense of scale and human presence to the vastness of the scene. A fishing pole protrudes from the water just in front of him, hinting at an activity that takes place within this tranquil setting. Dubbels' early work reflects the tonal phase characteristic of Dutch painting during that time period. However, this particular piece stands out with its refined and brighter palette, exuding a golden hue. It is believed that Dubbels painted this masterpiece between 1650 and 1660 while working closely with Jan van de Cappelle and Willem van de Velde II under Simon de Vlieger's guidance. Displayed at Manchester Art Gallery in the UK, this print serves as an exquisite testament to Dubbels' skillful portrayal of maritime scenes and invites viewers into an idyllic world where time seems to stand still.
