EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases the exquisite George I twelve-light chandelier, dating back to approximately 1719. Crafted with meticulous detail and adorned in gilt-gesso, this masterpiece stands at an impressive height of 124x101.5x101.5 cm. The central column of the chandelier is crowned by a ducal coronet resting above a Corinthian capital, exuding regality and grandeur. From here, four gracefully scrolled branches extend outward on each side, featuring brass drip-pans and nozzles that add a touch of elegance. Below the baluster section lies another set of four scrolls, beautifully carved with acanthus husks and foliage against a hatched ground backdrop. The upper part of the sphere boasts intricate gadrooning while four cartouches enclose pounced ovals on its surface. Notably, this remarkable piece retains much of its original gesso but underwent water-gilding during the 19th century for added splendor. While one large branch was replaced in that same era, it bears the stamp "K. E. BOWERS & SON 1969" atop the sphere as evidence of restoration work done by them. Capturing both history and artistry in one frame, this photograph allows us to appreciate every fine detail and craftsmanship that went into creating such an extraordinary chandelier from the Georgian period.
