EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases a remarkable bas-relief that depicts an earlier life of the Buddha known as the Vishvantara Jataka. Created by the Chinese School in the 7th century, this exquisite artwork originates from Xinjiang, China. The bas-relief narrates a poignant story of compassion and selflessness. In this particular scene, we witness Vishvantara, a prince who willingly sacrifices his kingdom's protective elephant to offer it to a Brahman. As a consequence, he is exiled along with his family. During their exile, Vishvantara continues to demonstrate extraordinary generosity by divesting himself of his chariot, horse, children, and even his wife for the benefit of others. Moved by such immense kindness exhibited by the prince, divine beings intervene and return all that was lost before he reunites with his subjects. The photograph captures an emotional moment when Vishvantara's children find solace in two devinites disguised as their parents while being held by beggar Jujaka. Through its intricate details and masterful craftsmanship preserved over centuries in dryland conditions at Tumshuq (Toqquz Sarai), this bas-relief serves as both an artistic marvel and a visual representation of timeless moral values such as empathy and sacrifice. Photographed by Sylvain Collet with great precision and respect for copyright regulations; this image invites us to appreciate not only its aesthetic beauty but also reflect on the profound teachings conveyed within this ancient masterpiece.
